I think you need to substantiate your claim that passwords should "NEVER start with a number". I cannot think of any logical reason why this would represent a weakness.

The story of Steve has another side. Steve (is he hypothetical?) was as much at fault as the owner of the business. Neither Steve nor the business should have allowed a situation to develop wherein he was irreplaceable. It was also up to Steve to ensure that his employers understood his value for the sake of himself and the business.

It's not all about length. I entered in my password, with shifted key entry so I didn't enter in my actual password, and at 13 characters the entire top is blue with a score of 100%.

I use the same method Michael describes as the second method. Come up with a phrase that is meaningful to you. And since you will be doing random character swapping, it doesn't matter if it's a phrase that someone knows to be true about you. The point is that they wouldn't guess it.

I live in a red brick house. I have 3 kids, two dogs and two cats.
The first password would be:
iliarbhih3ktdatc

After character swapping:
1L!@Rb#iHEk2daEC

You will likely find yourself saying the phrase to yourself as you type in your password for a while, just don't say it out loud!!!! After a few weeks of entering it in, your muscle memory will take over and you will effortlessly type in your new password. The great thing is that you can make small changes in your phrase to have new password.
